A diary (July 6-Oct. 26, 1871) kept by the secretary of the board of trade of Amsterdam during his travels in the U.S. as a member of a five-man commission invited by financier Jay Cooke to assess the potential for European investment in the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad from Duluth (Minn.) to Portland (Ore.). This typescript copy is a translation of the Dutch original, which was subsequently lost.
